The Life List by Lori Nelson Spielman: A Review
The Life List by Lori Nelson Spielman is one of my all-time favourite inspirational fiction books. It’s a page-turner and an easy read, but most importantly, it’s an inspiring read full of reminders on following your heart.
Brett Bohlinger seems to have it all: a job, a boyfriend, a home. But when her mother passes away, her life is turned upside down. That is, her mother left her with an extensive to-do list. And to receive her inheritance, Brett must complete the list within a year.
The list that Brett must complete is a life list of goals that she dreamed of accomplishing at the age of fourteen. But somewhere along the way, Brett lost sight of these dreams. Today, her life resembles nothing of the goals that she dreamed of in the past. Inside the Life List, Brett embarks on a journey to figure out who she truly is and what she truly wants in life.
As Carl Jung said, “Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.” The Life List is a book about finding your true self and following your heart. So often do we dream but never take steps to act on those dreams. Maybe we hold back for fear things won’t work out. Perhaps we are scared to show others who we truly are. Regardless of the reason, whenever we hold ourselves back from being our authentic selves and following our hearts, we ultimately betray ourselves.
I believe our dreams are our dreams for a reason. And we must take action on our dreams, or they will escape us over time. So I ask you this: will you keep on dreaming, or will you make your dreams into reality as Brett does inside the book?
As much as you think your life is planned out for the long term, the fact is, life happens. We never know what will happen tomorrow, let alone years from now. In every moment, we have the opportunity to begin anew. It’s possible to choose a life where you do not compromise who you are and go after your dreams.
Inside the Life List, you will see resistance to change and doubt, but then you will see the making of a strong individual who learns to speak for herself.
Have you lost track of your life list? I highly recommend this book to anyone who has lost their way and needs a compass back to their inner selves.
